Ayurveda & Food - Some Insights

We all love fruits, those healthy natural deposits of vitamins, water, nutrients and other useful elements. However ,not many people are aware about the fact that eating fruits at the end of lunches or dinners can be quite harmful. Ayurveda suggest some easy rules, which can help us to rip maximum benefits from eating fruit.

Because foods have different qualities and require different digestive energies, food combining is of the utmost importance in Ayurveda. For instance, fruits digest quicker than grains, so eating the two together confuses the digestive process and creates FERMENTATION and ama. When a food that digests easily and quickly (such as fruit) is made to stick around in the stomach while other, heavier foods (such as grains and carbohydrates) finish their "cooking"(digestion in the tract) process, a mixed message that disrupts the agni (digestive fire) is sent to the internal organs.

Foods that have a predominantly sour quality, or fermented foods such as yogurt, should not be eaten with sweet foods such as milk or fruit. The sour quality can cause the milk to separate and ferment in the stomach leading to toxic buildup in the GI tract and the deeper tissues over time. If such alterations are present during longer periods of time they can lead to various diseases related with digestion, colitis, diarrhea, and even pains in liver and mainly acidosis of the blood.( which leads to diseases like boils, skin diseases,Psoriasis , damage to the internal organs, arthritis, gout, renal calculi, hair loss, heart diseases, tumors ,osteoporosis and even cancer)

Please avoid banana , chikoo & mango milkshakes for the same reason!

Avoid eating raw fruit after sunset, as the digestion is not as strong after the sun goes down. which again leads to the same problems as mentioned above

Make a habit of eating fruits on an empty stomach. This habit will bring more good to your health. Your stomach and digestive system will not have to use additional mechanisms to balance the process of digestion. It is also very good to eat fruits after doing physical exercises or any sort of outdoor activities.

Melons should be eaten alone and not be eaten with any other fruit or even water
